The hospital opened its doors to the public on August 12, 1998, and was chosen as the best regional hospital in 2003. It was the first of a series of ultra-modern regional hospitals built by the Ministry of Health.
The hospital was renamed Cape Coast Teaching Hospital after the University of Cape Coast’s School of Medical Sciences was established. The first cohort of medical students graduated from the teaching hospital in June of 2013.
